I am a creature of habit. Sometimes that can get a little quirky. In fact, my children know that certain things in our house are reserved for my use. I have “my spot” on the couch, my chair at the dining table, and my water glass (from my favorite college team: let’s go Iowa Hawkeyes!). Some might see these as eccentricities. My kids sometimes find it annoying. I find it essential.

Not so much the spot on the couch, but the daily habits that keep me focused on what God has called me to do.
Last week, we concluded the second quarter of the school year. Since joining this team, there have been times where I was unsure if we would make it to this moment. Yet we serve a God who has miraculously provided for LCS. From our teachers last summer to the daily miracles He is performing in the lives of students, God has been faithful. This is a place set apart for His good purpose, and He is not done yet.
In those moments when I become focused on the logistics, the challenges, and the strategies to address them, I so often lose sight of that. That is why one of my favorite moments each week is Friday chapel. As I stand there, I hear these young people from kindergarten to twelfth grade lifting up their voices and hands in worship, celebrating a God who loves them, and offering praise in response to His goodness. When I hear one of our young people share a message from the Word about passionately pursuing Christ, or even when the A/V system glitches and the TVs go dark, eliminating every distraction, we remain focused only on the one deserving of praise. I have experienced nothing quite like it.
It is why we do what we do. This is what is means to give every hour making disciples.
I wish you could see all of the examples of God at work in our students. I hope to share a few of those with you in the coming months. Most of all, I pray you’ll remember to keep your life centered on Christ. May you not be distracted by what life throws in your path, but keep Jesus at the center and do everything for the glory of God.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
Hebrews 12:1-2
