Lima, NY—The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) has announced its 2020-21 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction award winners. Lima Christian School is among them.
The purpose of the School of Distinction award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor. This year, only 64 schools among the 731 districts across New York State earned the School of Distinction Award. Schools can apply for School of Distinction status by having 100% of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.
“Lima Christian’s athletic program has always emphasized more than just competitive sports. Our coaches instill character in our student athletes. Sports is a wonderful vehicle for helping young men and young women learn about discipline, teamwork, and dedication to a higher goal. As a Christian school, we encourage our students to do all to the glory of God. It’s true in athletics, academics and every area of life,” said Mr. Michael Burns, Lima Christian’s Athletic Director.
Lima Christian School will be presented a certificate and a commemorative award at the local athletic director workshop this fall.

With numerous COVID-19 protections in place, the Livingston County Health Department has determined that it will allow higher risk and moderate risk school sports to begin practicing this week. This includes basketball.
Typically, LCS teams play in the Private-Parochial League of Section V, but the school falls under the Livingston County Department of Health, which has okayed the high-risk sports. “On the boys side, we have light numbers and a very young group,” said LCS Athletic Director Mike Burns. “We decided because of those factors, we would field only a JV team to put the boys in the best position for having some success, having fun and staying safe.”
The girls will play on a varsity team in Section V. “We have about 15-16 [girls] who have indicated interest in playing,” said Burns. “Because we don’t know until they come out, varsity girls coach Dave Tillapaugh and I decided to go with just one team so that if we have injuries we can still field a team without pulling up JV players and thereby shorting the JV squad.”
During a phone interview on Friday, January 29, Burns said that as of that day, he had only seen a draft schedule for the Private-Parochial League for the varsity girls. That schedule would include games against fellow league members C.G. Finney, Northstar Christian Academy, Chesterton Academy, Eugenio Maria Hosta Charter School(CHECK), Rochester Academy Charter School and Rochester Prep Charter School.
“I anticipate a final schedule being finalized early next week,” Burns stated.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Associate, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) has announced its 2019-20 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction award winners. Lima Christian School is among them.
The purpose of the School of Distinction award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor. This year, only 56 schools among the over 700 districts across New York State earned the School of Distinction award. A school can apply for School of Distinction status by having 100% of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during the respective sports seasons.
In a statement, Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director, said, “We continue to be proud oof this program which highlights and celebrates schools that value the importance of academics as well as athletics. The fact that so many student-athletes thrived in the face of a pandemic this past winter is truly remarkable.”
“Lima Christian’s athletic program has always emphasized more than just competitive sports,” said Michael Burns, Lima Christian’s athletic director. “Our coaches instill character in our student athletes. Sports are a wonderful vehicle for helping young men and women learn about discipline, teamwork, and dedication to a higher goal. As a Christian school, we encourage our students to do all to the glory of God. It’s true in athletics, academics, and every area of life.”
For the 2019-20 school year, the School of Distinction winners were based on fall 2019 and winter 2020 Scholar-Athlete submissions because the spring 2020 program was cancelled.
